Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm related hazard. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. The next highest percentage of flood-related deaths is due to walking into or near flood waters. People underestimate the force and power of water. Many of the deaths occur in automobiles as they are swept downstream. Of these drownings, many are preventable, but too many people continue to drive around the barriers that warn you the road is flooded. A mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a small car, while 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles. It is NEVER safe to drive or walk into flood waters.

Thoughts and prayers needed for a Canal Fulton Police Officer (Ohio) who has been shot. We received word that the officer is okay. Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery!

Update: “At approximately 6:14 PM on June 15, 2019 Canal Fulton Police officers were called to 325 Waterside Ave in Canal Fulton for a welfare check. Complainant advised that a 39 year old Gabriel Mayberry was making threatening statements to harm others and himself. It was also learned that he had an active warrant for his arrest for failure to appear for an OVI charge.

Upon arrival, officers were able to initiate contact with Mr. Mayberry through a window. Numerous attempts were made requesting him to come outside. Those request were to no avail as he refused to comply. Mr. Mayberry began making suicidal threats to the officers and to other individuals through his cell phone.

While officers were attempting further contact, they were fired upon through the front door with a single gunshot. A projectile from the gunshot struck Sgt. Josh Barabasch in the foot. Officer’s held a perimeter around the apartment complex for additional units to arrive, including the Stark County Regional Swat CO-OP.

After numerous failed attempts to establish contact with Mr. Mayberry, a swat unit entered into the residence. At 8:46 PM SWAT officer’s located Mr. Mayberry with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations as well as the Stark County Coroner's Office, was called to process the scene.

Sgt. Barabasch was treated for his injuries at Aultman hospital and released. He is expected to make a full recovery.
